The Inspiration Behind My Music and Ministry
Jesus Christ is the biggest source of inspiration in my life and my music. My earliest music spoke of the past
that I thought I could never be free of and the power of God to break chains and bring healing. Looking back
over the years, I saw a turning point where my songs were written straight from the Word of God and carried
a power and anointing to bring healing and deliverance to those who pressed into the Holy Ghost as the church
worshiped in unity. God told me if I were to minister to people, I had to open up to them and so I find that my
newest music not only speaks of events in my past, but at the same time it shows the power of Jesus Christ to
complete a person. It is both personal and powerful, as it is given by the Holy Ghost. Jesus knows how to get on
our level and is not afraid of what he will find if we open our hearts and lives to him.
My mom has been a huge influence in my life and my music . For as long as I can remember, there has been
music in my life. Mom has been singing since she was a very young girl and also writes her own songs. She
taught me one of the most important things I’ve ever learned; to always be myself. When I would learn songs
growing up, she would always say, “Mechelle, don’t try to sing like anybody but yourself. You have your own voice.
Be yourself.” Those words have stayed with me throughout my life. When I would compare myself to another
artist or singer, I remembered them and could do nothing except be myself. Thank you, mom. I love you.
With all of that being said, my husband is the love of my life. I’ve come to realize that he is my best friend.
He has been with me through amazing times and through very dark times. I’ve never been afraid of anything
when he is with me. I’ve never had to worry about ministering to God’s people because Shannon has always
made sure that everything was taken care of behind the scenes. My husband has done everything from making
sure there are batteries in my mic to running the sound booth while I’m leading worship. He has a quiet
strength and loves me more than he loves himself. He loves me the way Jesus loved the church…and gave
himself for her.
